The rebel founder of Brown University writes to a Continental Congress delegate

Co-founder of Brown University (1738–1836), he was also responsible for the construction of the first factory houses during the American industrial revolution. ALS, one page, 7.75 x 12.5, July 16, 1781. Letter to John Alsop. In part: “I was at Nantucket at this yearly meeting, at Falmouth and North W to Pembrook. Since which at our Quarterly Meeting and friend are generously well…Many friends have been comforted to find Thomas was a Live and that friend amongst you was favored to Loose him and let him go, his payment of missed taxes does not break with him here where Charity is prevalent, tho the Testimony against War in this respect increases Amongst us, I have had very little opportunity save at meetings with him which seems some disappointment, however his Company & Service having been very Satisfactory.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds, a few small separations along folds, scattered toning, and a small hole to left edge.
