You were kind to take the time to write to me with your views on the subject, and I’m grateful for your ideas. As I said at the end of my presidency and again at the John F. Kennedy Library last month, I believe, as you do, that the 22nd Amendment probably could be modified to say that no person shall serve as President for more than two consecutive terms, rather than two terms in a lifetime. It wouldn’t affect me, but in the future, people will be living longer, and there may come a time when we elect a President at age 45 or 50, and, 20 years later, the country encounters the same sort of problems that the President faced before. It might be beneficial for us to be able to bring that person back, and therefore worth reevaluting [sic] the Amendment—but I think that the decision is one that the American people must make for themselves.” In fine condition.
