DS, signed “G. Bernard Shaw, (10 Adelphe Terrace), W. C. Z., 8/7/18,” one page, 8.5 x 5.5, Shaw sends a check for a young couple in the amount of “5-5-0” pounds, and adds his suggestions for presentation of a gift. In full: “Much the most effective present for a young couple setting up housekeeping is a cheque. I strongly suggest that you collect all the cash you can, and then write the richer contributors (including myself, probably) to make the total up to the nearest round sum that looks presentable. This has the advantage that there is one substantial present instead of a heap of miscellaneous rubbish, and that as no amounts are mentioned all the contributors are placed on an equal footing.” In very good condition, with one central vertical fold and two horizontal folds, the latter affecting the tallest letters of the signature, light scattered creasing, a small tear forming at the right edge, and bending to the lower right corner. An individual known primarily for his dark, satirical wit, this message is a rare find, revealing a softer, more genteel side of Shaw. RRAuction COA.
