Description

“There is a local place here where they…play the Tango, and where you see girls with short skirts and boyish haircuts”

Eminent French artist (1869–1954), most closely associated with the Fauvist movement, best known for his colorful paintings, fluid drawings, and bold, distinctive cut-paper collages. ALS in pencil, signed “HM,” on a 5.25 x 3.5 picture postcard of Tahiti, February 4, 1930. Postcard to Monsieur Thorndike in Nice. In full (translated): “There is a local place here where they serve tea and play the Tango, and where you see girls with short skirts and boyish haircuts. But they have preserved the coconut trees!” A couple creases, scattered mild toning, soiling, and foxing, and postal cancellations near body of text, otherwise fine condition.
