Description

A rare handwritten letter from Stein to author Gertrude Atherton as she prepares to go west: “It will be fun seeing California again”

Expatriate American writer (1874–1946) best known for novels, poetry, and opera libretti marked by a distinctive, playfully experimental, sometimes nonsensical use of language. Scarce ALS, one page both sides, 6 x 9.5, Midway Drexel Apartment Hotel letterhead, no date. Letter to esteemed California novelist Gertrude Atherton, who is credited with painting a cultural persona for the sunshine state through her many works, particularly the 1898 novel, ‘The Californians.’ In part: “Thanks for all your kindness…and it will be a very great pleasure seeing you again and your daughter whom we remember very pleasantly, and it will be fun seeing California again, and we do very gladly accept your invitation may it be for a lunch any day that I am not lecturing in the afternoon and the P.E.N. club will be nice.” In very good to fine condition, with uniform toning to page, heavier to edges of front side, small pencil notation to top, and a few creases and wrinkles. Stein is quite uncommon in holographic letters, and this has particularly nice association between the two writers. RRAuction COA.
