Description

Thanking a bookseller for a gift of “landscape illustrations of Waverley”

Scottish novelist and poet (1771–1832) best known for such classics as Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, and Waverley. ALS signed “Walter Scott,” one page, 7.25 x 8.75, no date [postmarked May 14, 1830]. Scott writes to bookseller Charles Till in Fleet Street. In full: “I have very ungraciously left unacknowledged your present of the landscape illustrations of Waverley. I pretend to no knowledge of art so my opinion ought to go for nothing. But I think they are very beautiful and sincerely hope they will answer the purpose of the artists and publishers.” Second integral page bears an address leaf in Scott’s hand along with wax seal remnants. In very good condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, and light creasing and wrinkling. Tilt would later publish works by Scott, including the work Scott talks about in this letter. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
