Description

Lister writes of “old student days” to the fellow classmate he accompanied to England’s first operation using ether some 50 years earlier

British surgeon (1827–1912) who pioneered the practice of sterile surgery, one of the most important medical advances of the day. His name later became synonymous with a best-selling brand of antiseptic mouthwash. ALS, one page both sides, 4.5 x 7, black-bordered letterhead, January 8, 1897. Letter to colleague Dr. William Squire. In part: “Your letter recalls old student days…I was extremely sorry to hear of your illness but I am glad that you are so far convalescent. I do know Professor George Buchanan and can testify to the completeness of his recovery.” In very good condition, with slight separation along central horizontal fold, uniform toning, and small tape remnant to bottom of back page. Outstanding association, as in their “old student days” Lister and Squire attended the first operation using ether in Great Britain on December 22, 1846, an event that Squire would later write about. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
