Choice ALS, one page both sides, 7.75 x 7.5, Kensington Palace letterhead, July 29, 1986. Letter of thanks to Margaret Hodge. In full: “You are really wonderful to have sent us such a lovely card on our wedding anniversary. The five years have flown by & what with two little men to look after it’s not surprising! Charles & I were so touched by your thought, Margaret, & we just wanted you to know how much it meant to us—A huge thank you!!! With much love to you all.” Near the top of the reverse are two small ink smudges, which Diana has labeled, “William’s Fingers!” In very fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Diana’s hand.
The original recipient of this remarkable letter had known Diana long before she became ‘the people’s princess.’ Having worked together at the Young England kindergarten in London, the pair remained friends during Diana’s royal courtship, marriage, and divorce...a friendship that lasted until Diana’s sudden death. The closeness of that friendship, however, is surpassed by the enthusiasm that pours from the princess’ words...excitement over Charles and sons William and Harry, her “two little men to look after.” One of those little men, an heir to the throne, must have been carefully observing his mother on this summer day as his tiny fingers placed two small prints on the personal correspondence. Energetic words and superlative content! Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
