Description

Domineering view of Mount Rushmore’s first stage

Distinguished American sculptor (1867–1941) best known for his monumental depiction of four presidents on Mount Rushmore. Incredible vintage matte-finish 10.5 x 13.25 photo of Washington’s facade atop Mount Rushmore, signed and inscribed in fountain pen “Greetings to Major Gen. Hagood, U.S.A. January 25, 1935. National Memorial Mount Rushmore, South Dakota. Official. Gutzon Borglum.” In fine condition, with light toning and some soiling along the edges. Major General Johnson Hagood was a career officer who was serving as commander of the Third Army in 1935. He was forced to retire a year after receiving this image as a result of publicly criticizing New Deal funding. A truly stunning shot of the beginning of Borglum’s masterpiece. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
