“I understand that General Rodman was the first to make powder grains with perforations, with a view to producing progressive combustion”

American chemist and inventor (1853–1927) best known for several innovations related to explosives, including smokeless gunpowder. TLS, one page, 8 x 10.5, March 9, 1900. Letter to Professor Monroe. In full: “I understand that General Rodman was the first to make powder grains with perforations, with a view to producing progressive combustion. I am desirous of learning the particulars of what he did and the dates. If you could give me any information on the subject, I should be very much obliged. I find a man by the name of Wierd patented a multi-perforated grain in 1883. Do you know anyone who produced, patented or published multi-perforated grains, or grains with a single perforation, earlier than that date?” In good condition, with two horizontal folds, with a partial separation through the fold through signature, scattered creases and wrinkles, mounting remnants to reverse, small tear to top edge, and several edge tears.
