Salmon P. Chase

Politician (1808–1873) who served as Secretary of the Treasury for the first three years of Abraham Lincoln's term, after which Lincoln appointed him to be Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. In that role Chase presided over the 1868 impeachment trial of President Andrew Johnson. Partly-printed DS, signed “S. P. Chase,” one page, 11.25 x 9.25, October 28, 1856. Chase, as governor of Ohio, commissions John C. Depew “Captain of the Blue Light Artillery Company, 3rd Brigade, 22 d Division, O. V. M.” Signed at the conclusion by Chase and countersigned by his secretary of state. In very good condition, with intersecting folds, several through signature, light overall toning, heavier to edges, and scattered light creases. RRAuction COA.
