“Without being willing to embarrass you in the least by suggestions, I will say that the appointment of Genl. Schneider would be gratifying to most of our friends in Northern Ohio”

ALS signed “J. A. Garfield,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, Fortieth Congress, U.S. letterhead, December 5, 1867. Letter to an unidentified general. In full: “Several of the prominent Republicans of Northern Ohio, have written me requesting that I should ask your favorable consideration of Gen. E. F. Schneider of Canton, Stark Co., Ohio for the office of Adjt. Genl of Ohio. Without being willing to embarrass you in the least by suggestions, I will say that the appointment of Genl. Schneider would be gratifying to most of our friends in Northern Ohio.” Second page of the letter has been professionally inlaid to a slightly larger off-white sheet. In fine condition, with intersecting folds, some scattered light toning, and a couple light brushes to text. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
