Signed book: George Gershwin’s Songbook. First edition, first printing. NY: Simon & Schuster, 1932. Hardcover, 9.5 x 13, 167 pages. Signed and inscribed under his image opposite the title page, “To Van Nest Polglase, every good wish, George Gershwin, Nov. 23, 1936.” Next to his signature and still under his photo portrait, Gershwin adds a five bar AMQS from ‘Rhapsody In Blue.’ In very good condition, with a rusty paperclip mark to top of signed page, as well as a bit of mild toning, more moderate toning to inside and opening pages, another inscription to Polglase by an unknown signer (most likely an RKO executive) on the second free end page, a couple separated pages, scattered light surface wear and corner bumps to covers, as well as some light sunning and fraying to ends of the spine. Polglase was head of the design department at RKO Pictures, where he worked on 333 films between 1925 and 1957, including The Gay Divorcee, Top Hat, and Citizen Kane. A beautifully penned example of Gershwin’s most desirable composition. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
