Description

Extremely rare signed photo of Taft golfing

Very rare sepia matte-finish 7.5 x 5.5 photo of Taft playing golf, signed in the wide right border in fountain pen, “Wm. H. Taft.” Photo is affixed to an 8.75 x 7 board. In very good condition, with clipped top right corner, silvering to darker areas of image, a few small edge creases and tears, and a bit of mild toning and soiling to background. Taft was the first president to take up golf. Some western voters—those who equated Taft's Unitarianism with atheism—thought his golf playing indecent if not immoral. His love for the sport caused a golf boom in the nation, doubling the number of players on public courses. Taft’s affection for golf also caused political problems during his presidency, when critics thought he would do well to spend less time on the links and more time at work in the White House. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
