Description

Foreshadowing her tragic flight from paparazzi:“I was in a total daze having fought off six press men!”

ALS, one page both sides, 6.5 x 4, Kensington Palace notecard, August 28, 1996. In full: “I do apologise for looking so blank on Friday as I saw you from my car—I was in a total daze having fought off six press men! The motorbike rider you mentioned is locked up in prison for 3 months! Lots of love Gerry to you both & I'd love to see you when life is a little less turbulent.” In fine condition.

Diana’s marriage to Prince Charles had a fairy book start but a horrific ending, the finality of their wedding vows coming on the day she sent this message from Kensington Palace. The more emotional punch, of course, is her frustrated comment regarding the paparazzi. Diana had already filed a complaint against a stalking press photographer who made her fear for her safety, and just a few days before writing this note, a British court gave that photographer, Martin Stenning, a 12-week sentence after he admitted criminal damage.

Her slight sense of relief noted in these lines would be short-lived, and her fears would prove to be more than just a shy celebrity trying to eke out some privacy as the world would discover almost one year to the day later when her vehicle would crash while being pursued by photographers. Her comment on having “fought off six press men” elicits particular emotion, as the princess not only lived most of her adult life in a glass bubble but would soon die from injuries sustained as her driver eluded the paparazzi.
