Description

“I am glad you stood with me in the matter of the country’s honor—a thing which certainly did once exist”

ALS signed “Mark Twain,” one page, 4.5 x 5.75, March 8. While in New York, Clemens writes “Mr. Lloyd,” most likely progressive political activist and muckraking journalist, Henry Demarest Lloyd. In full: “I thank you very much for the book—which I shall be allowed to look at when the family have finished exercising their prerogative of first-chance. I am glad you stood with me in the matter of the country’s honor—a thing which certainly did once exist.” Affixed to a slightly larger sheet. Vertical fold, scattered bends, and wrinkling from glue residue at the top of the page, otherwise fine condition. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
