Description

Churchill grants permission for the publication of his letter to a prominent Irish politician: “I have of course no objection to your including the letter I wrote to Lord Carson in 1927”

TLS signed “Yours sincerely, Winston S. Churchill,” one page, 6.5 x 9, 10 Downing Street letterhead, August 1952. Letter to author and member of Parliament H. M. Hyde. In full: “Thank you for your letter. I have of course no objection to your including the letter I wrote to Lord Carson in 1927, in the Biography of him which you have written. So many people ask me these days to contribute articles and forewords to their books that, alas, I find I cannot do so. I hope therefore you will excuse me for not accepting your invitation.” Double cloth matted and framed with a seated portrait of Churchill and a name plaque to an overall size of 22 x 20.5. In fine condition, with a bit of scattered light toning and soiling, and light mirroring of letterhead along bottom edge. Written during his second term as prime minister, Churchill is referencing Hyde’s 1953 biography, The Life of Sir Edward Carson, Lord Carson of Duncairn, concerning the prominent ‘uncrowned king’ of the Irish Protestant’s with whom he had a long friendship. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
