Union general (1831–1901) who saw action at Bull Run, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg, as well as nearly all the engagements of the Peninsula Campaign and Sherman’s March to the Sea. He is generally credited as the composer of the bugle call ‘Taps.’ War-dated ALS signed “Dan’l Butterfield, Maj. Genl. Vols USA,” one page, lightly-lined, 7.75 x 9.25, Headquarters, Army of the Potomac letterhead, March 16, 1863. Letter to New York Governor Horatio Seymour. In part: “I have the honor to enclose here with letters of recommendation for Sergt. Wm. H. Griffin…Col.
