Description

Wilfred T. Grenfell

British physician (1865-1940) known for his medical missionary work in Newfoundland and Labrador. TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, November 5, 1925. Grenfell writes Edward A. Filene, president of Filene’s department store, for a donation for a new hospital to be built in Newfoundland. In part: “The original hospital which we built for our people in Newfoundland, for our fisherman, we had to cut out of green wood in the forest. We have added and added to it during the years, and meanwhile, have been training our boys up here to build out of better material. From the Pratt Institute in New York, and Wentworth here in Boston, our boys have returned; and the hospital being inadequate and unsafe, as well as uneconomic in operation, and so crowded that not only has every bed been filled, and the space between the beds, but in some beds we have had two patients, that we decided the time had come when we must build a larger building in better material.” Grenfell has made a few handwritten corrections to the text. In very good condition, with small stains, a staple hole at the upper left corner, office stamps, and a few handwritten notations. RRAuction COA.
