Description

Thomas Lipton

Self-made man, merchant, and yachtsman (1848–1931) who created the Lipton tea brand and was the most persistent challenger in the history of the America's Cup. TLS, one page, 8 x 10.5, July 18, 1919. Lipton responds to a letter from R. H. England of the Central Railroad of Oregon in Rochester, New York. In full: “Your letter of the 18th ultimo addressed to the Commodore Hotel has been forwarded to me here, and I am greatly obliged to you for your kindness in inviting me to Buffalo for the 27th of June. Unfortunately, of course, this was impossible; nevertheless, I very highly appreciate your kind thought and hope at some future time I may have the privilege. Owing to important business recalling me to England, I was compelled to cut short my stay and regret I did not have the pleasure of seeing you before leaving.” In very good condition, with uniform toning, intersecting horizontal and vertical folds, light wrinkling, and areas of soiling.
