Description

As a New York official, Arthur endorses an inspector’s oath of office

DS, signed “C. A. Arthur,” one page, 8.5 x 8, March 10, 1875. Arthur approves an Oath of Office in his capacity as Collector of the Port of New York. In part: “I, George W. Farrer, having been appointment Night Inspector of Customs…for the Port and District of New York, do solemnly…swear that I will diligently and faithfully execute the duties of the said office.” Also signed by Farrer. In very good condition, with an ink blot, old tape reinforcement on the reverse of two horizontal folds, edge chipping, the lower portion of the document missing, and a few pencil notations at the top edge.
