Description

A ‘Who’s Who’ of the Democratic Party including JFK, Truman, and Eleanor Roosevelt

Seating list from the Advisory Council of the Democratic National Committee Diamond Jubilee Dinner honoring Eleanor Roosevelt, 8.5 x 14, 7 pages, held at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City on December 7, 1959. Signed on the cover page in blue ballpoint by John F. Kennedy, Harry S. Truman, and Eleanor Roosevelt; also signed by ten others in ink and ballpoint including Adlai Stevenson, Hubert H. Humphrey, Paul M. Butler, Mike Mansfield, Carl Albert, John McCormack, and Robert Meyner. Staple hole to top of each page, paperclip mark to top edge of cover, light overall soiling and toning to cover, with a few heavier spots, a few small stains, and expected creases from handling, and light handling wear to remaining pages, otherwise fine condition.

Technically an evening feting the former first lady, an Associated Press news story instead dubbed the evening a ‘beauty contest’ of 1960 presidential hopefuls from the Democratic Party. Led by Truman, the night’s ‘honorary chairman,’ the article cited Stevenson, the event’s official chairman, as the leading candidate and the Democrats’ best chance to secure the White House. Fascinating in historical context, the eventual winner of the 1960 election—JFK—was mentioned last...after New Jersey Governor Robert Meyner. A unique and marvelous ensemble of presidential possibilities. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
