ALS signed “J. A. Garfield,” one page, lightly-lined, 5 x 8, June 21, 1880. Letter of thanks to Thomas Stevens. In full: “Accept my thanks for your kind letter of congratulations of the 9th inst. An earlier reply was impossible and the volume of my correspondence makes a longer one equally so.” Letter is affixed to a slightly larger off-white album page. Staining to corners from adhesive on reverse, scattered toning and soiling, Garfield’s signature a bit cramped, and pencil remnants to top left, otherwise very good condition. Garfield, considered a ‘dark horse’ at the Convention, beat out U. S. Grant, who was seeking an unprecedented third term in office. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
