The future justice organizes a celebration of Lincoln’s private secretary, John Hay

Mayor of Cleveland, Ohio senator, and Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. TLS signed “Harold H. Burton,” one page, 7.25 x 10.5, City of Cleveland letterhead, August 7, 1937. Letter, written as mayor of Cleveland, to Judge Don F. Lybarger, regarding honoring the 100th birthday of John Hay. In part: “October 8, 1938, marks the one hundredth anniversary of the birth of John Hay. You will recall him in many ways–among them as a Clevelander who served as private secretary to President Lincoln and as Secretary of State in the Cabinet of President Theodore Roosevelt. It is proposed that the people of Cleveland join next year in an outstanding civic observance…Accordingly, I urgently invite you to meet with me and some of our leading citizens…to consider such a plan.” In fine condition.
