Description

Exceptionally rare and distinguished studio portrait of legendary aviation pioneer Wilbur Wright

Rare vintage matte-finish 4.5 x 6.5 photo, affixed to its original 8 x 10 photographer’s mount, by White Studios of New York, showing Wright outdoors in a jacket and hat, signed and inscribed in fountain pen, “To Col. Geo. S. Anderson, with my compliments, Wilbur Wright.” Scattered silvering to darker areas of image and background, a couple small areas of surface scuffing and loss to left side of facial area, a few other light surface dings, missing both lower corner tips of mount, a couple subtle ripples to photo, and some scattered light staining and soiling to mount, otherwise very good condition.

This photo’s original recipient was a West Point graduate who rose to the rank of colonel and was assigned as a member of the newly created General Staff of the Army in 1906, then sent to Governors Island to serve as Chief of Staff of the Department of the East. It was while stationed there that Anderson and the famed aviator met as Wright embarked on his historic 20-mile, 33-minute flight up the Hudson River from Governors Island to Grant’s Tomb and back in October 1909. Photographs signed by Wilbur Wright, who died in 1912, are extremely rare. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
