Merritt A. Edson

US Marine Corps general (1897–1955) who was awared the Medal of Honor, two Navy Crosses, the Silver Star, and two Legions of Merit. He is best known by Marines for the defense of Lunga Ridge during the Guadalcanal Campaign in World War II. He committed suicide in 1955 while serving as Executive Director of the NRA. TLS, one page, 8.25 x 10.75, State of Vermont Department of Public Safety letterhead, December 14, 1948. Short letter to an admirer. In part: “I shall be very glad to autograph your copy of ‘Betio Beachhead’ if you will send it to me for that purpose.” In fine condition, with a bit of light edge toning, and a staple hole to right edge.
