Description

“Men and women whom I would like to appoint will not serve and those who want to serve I do not want to appoint...I am becoming quite discouraged”

TLS, one page, 8.25 x 10.5, Office of the Mayor letterhead, October 19, 1943. The frustrated mayor writes John S. Burke of B. Altman & Company in New York City. In part: “I have your letter…which I have not acknowledged before this in the hope that you might reconsider. I am now informed that you have made up your mind and therefore there is nothing left for me to do but accept your resignation. First I want to thank you for your helpful services…I understand also the terrible demands upon your time and you, in turn, I am sure must understand my problems. The law creates boards and vests the responsibility for the appointment of the members upon the Mayor…Applicants are numerous but those who apply either have an axe to grind, [are] politically minded or just do not qualify under the standards that I seek to maintain…Men and women whom I would like to appoint will not serve and those who want to serve I do not want to appoint. It is becoming increasingly difficult and I am becoming quite discouraged.” Intersecting folds with a vertical fold crossing his last name, light wrinkling, and a few spots of soiling, otherwise fine condition.
