Adolph Sutro

Mining engineer (1830–1898) who formed the Sutro Tunnel Company which constructed a tunnel to provide ventilation, drainage, and an easy means of transporting men and materials to and from the mines in the region of the Comstock Lode. Retiring to San Francisco in 1879, he became active in civic and business affairs, and was elected mayor in 1894. Wells Fargo & Co. bank check, 8 x 3, filled out in another hand and signed by Sutro, payable to F. T. Newbury for $200.00, August 31, 1892. Three vertical folds, one through a single letter of signature, cancellation cut to body, and expected stamps, otherwise fine condition. RRAuction COA.
