Description

Mingus mulls loaning his Italian bass to a young counterpart: “It is the bass I recorded the Columbia records on. It is a superb bass even in its poor state of repair”

Influential jazz bassist and composer (1922–1979) whose complex, innovative works meld elements of jazz, classical, and gospel. TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, September 21, 1961. Mingus writes to 15 year old fan Paul Fischler concerning possibly lending him an instrument. In part: “I was thinking I may be able to let you use my Italian bass since you seem sincere in your venture. It is the bass I recorded the Columbia records on. It is a superb bass even in its poor state of repair. It outsung most basses I hear today. the reason I may let you practice on it is my original bass that was just about totally destroyed may be fixed by a craftsman that is difficult to find in this country. I am waiting to hear from some people who know of such a man.” Light wrinkling, a couple of faint creases, some toning, and the signature a shade light, otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope and an unused matchbook advertising Charles Mingus’ Jazz Workshop. Incredible content as the famed musician considers helping a young fellow musician. Pre-certified Roger Epperson/REAL and RRAuction COA.
