Description

The novelist who coined the phrase “the pen is mightier than the sword”

English politician, poet, playwright, and prolific novelist. He was immensely popular with the reading public and wrote a stream of best-selling novels which earned him a considerable fortune. Among the phrases he coined: “the pen is mightier than the sword" and the famous opening line, "it was a dark and stormy night.” Two items: ALS, no date, on black-edge mourning stationery, signed “E. L. Bulwer,” written in his difficult to decipher hand regarding a coffin; and a partial ALS signed “E. Lytton Bulwer.” In very good condition, with partial separation along the hinge of the first letter, intersecting folds to the partial ALS, and scattered toning. RRAuction COA.
