Jay Gould

Financier (1836–1892) well known for his stock market manipulation of railroad securities; he also tried to corner the gold market, causing the ‘Black Friday’ stock market crash of September 1869. DS, one page, 11.25 x 8, April 9, 1880. Certificate for one hundred shares of the Capital Stock of the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway Company issued to W. E. Connor. Signed at the bottom by Gould as the company’s president. Vertical folds, multiple punch holes to left side, other scattered cancellation and pin holes, including a couple to signature, and light overall creasing, otherwise very good condition.
