Description

Hepburn’s 1952 British driving permit

Hepburn’s Great Britain and Northern Ireland International Driving Permit, issued on March 18, 1952, 4 x 6.5, 34 pages. Stamp on the front cover indicates that this permit was issued by the London’s Automobile Association. The first page bears a 1.5 x 2 snapshot of Hepburn stapled to the top portion of the page, with an embossed seal to lower left corner of photo, and with Hepburn filling out her personal information underneath, in pencil, printing her name, birth date and home address of Hartford, Connecticut. A small peculiar caption, affixed to top of the front cover, reads, “This license is not valid in Great Britain and Northern Ireland, where a valid Driving License must be carried.” In fine condition, with expected handling wear, cover creasing and soiling, and several notations. Hepburn was overseas at the time preparing for her June debut in the first London performance of The Millionaires, alongside Robert Helpmann and Cyril Ritchard. It was during this period that the legendary actress kept this license close at hand, allowing her to travel around town at will, as well as to and from London’s New Theatre. An important personal artifact! Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
