Autograph letter to his Vice Presidential running mate, Senator George Dallas. In part: “The returns (unofficial) are in from all the counties-except one small Democratic County-and if correctly reported we have lost this State by a majority ranging from 75 to 200 votes….the counties in the Western division of the State failed to do as well as anticipated. All now depends on New York. It is true we will succeed without New York, if we carry Louisiana & Indiana & I think we will, and either one of the states of Connecticut, New Jersey, Maryland or N. Carolina. With the vote of New York - we cannot be defeated.” Polk’s signature has been clipped from the bottom of the letter and is not present. Second integral page bears an address panel in Polk’s hand as well as a mostly intact wax seal. A 4.5 x 2 area of paper loss to bottom right from removed signature, intersecting folds, scattered toning, mainly to edges, paper loss and adhesive remnants to second integral page, and scattered creasing and wrinkling, otherwise very good condition. Although Polk lost his home state of Tennessee to Henry Clay, he did, indeed, win the vote of New York and became the eleventh President. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
