Description

Jack London offers funds to the former slave who raised him from infancy

Bank check, 6 x 2.75, filled out and signed by London, payable to Jennie Prentiss for $15.00, stamp-dated February 23, 1910. Double matted and framed with a photo of the author to an overall size of 12.5 x 14.5. Some light wrinkles and creases, and cancellation holes to body, affecting tops of a few letters of signature, otherwise fine condition.

London’s literally lifelong relationship with Virginia ‘Mammy’ Jennie Prentiss dated to his birth, when his ailing mother hired the former slave to care for her infant. Prentiss watched over the boy as he matured, and when he was 15, loaned him $300 to purchase the sloop ‘Razzle Dazzle,’ his first sailing vessel, In later years, as London found success as an author, he repaid her generosity and supported Jennie and her family when they were in need. A remarkably intimate connection between the writer and one of the people who knew him best. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
