Description

Boldly-signed Hancock commission

Partly-printed DS, one page, 15.25 x 11.5, April 4, 1792. Governor Hancock appoints Israel Hunt a “Lieutenant of a Company in the Seventh Regiment and Third Division of the Militia of this Commonwealth…you are therefore carefully, and diligently to discharge the Duty of a Lieutenant in leading, ordering and exercising said Company in Arms, both inferior Officers and Soldiers; and to keep them in good Order and Discipline.” Boldly signed in the left blank area, “John Hancock.” Document is affixed to an identical size heavier stock sheet. In good condition, with small areas of paper loss along fragile intersecting folds, somewhat irregular overall toning, mild surface rubbing around signature, staining to left side, some light foxing, and a few heavier spots of staining to left side. The large paper seal is toned and slightly worn, but completely intact, and Hancock’s signature remains quite bold and prominent on the document. One of the most recognizable signatures in US history. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
