Description

Upon her return to Washington from Cuba where she led Red Cross relief efforts during and after the Spanish-American War, Clara Barton writes to her hometown librarian

ALS, one page, lightly-lined, 8.5 x 11, American National Red Cross letterhead, November 3, 1898. Letter to Mr. O. F. Jerlin, Oxford library. In full: "I perfectly agree with you. I am treating my dear and honored old native town badly. I will send to my photographer and have him send me a photo of the best picture I have, and that will be the nearest like me in the memory of the home, and towns people who know and remember me. I send you by tomorrow's mail a package of booklets that you may or may not have on your shelves. I hope some time to have something larger to send you. Believe me, Mr. Jerlin, I warmly appreciate the considerate honor of your request, and return to you, and the esteemed body of Trustees my sincere thanks." In very good condition, with partial separations and light paper loss along intersecting folds, a uniform shade of mild toning, and a couple of light brushes to text. Fond remembrances from Barton. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
