Description

Unusual Grand Army of the Republic calling card

One of Garfield's colorful Grand Army of the Republic National Staff Eugene Rawson Post No. 32 calling cards, 4 x 2.25, featuring an eye-catching embossed image of a GAR medal, and identifying Hayes as "Aide-de-Camp on Staff of Commander-in-Chief." Signed on the reverse in black ink, "Rutherford B. Hayes, Spiegel Grove, 7 Aug 1888." In fine condition, with just a hint of scattered light soiling to each side. A nicely signed and visually striking item, signed just months after leaving the presidency. Hayes was one of five members of the GAR to be elected president, and for a time it was virtually impossible to be nominated on the Republican ticket, as the GAR voting bloc wielded great political pwer. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
