Verne wrote this adventure novel in 1883, and the relationship between the author and his publisher developed into a mutually beneficial one. Hetzel substantially influenced Verne's writings, who in turn was so happy to find a willing publisher that he agreed to almost all changes that Hetzel suggested-perhaps the most notable one being the adoption of optimism in his novels. Verne, not an early enthusiast of technological or human progress, nevertheless agreed, and perhaps that spirit of good will prompted him to offer this specific example "for charity sponsored by the Countess of Paris."
