Union general (1825-1864) who served at Gettysburg, Second Bull Run, and Spotsylvania Court House. During the Siege of Petersburg, Birney fell ill with malaria and died three months later. Ink signature, "D. B. Birney, Maj. Genl," on an off-white 2 x 1 slip clipped from a larger document.
