Crisply-penned ALS, one page, 6.75 x 8, June 21, 1816. Letter to United States Ambassador Thomas Aspinwall. In full: 'The Seamen belonging to the Susan have repeatedly applied to me representing themselves to be in a destitute and distressed condition. It appears to me that while their wages are denied them, they must be provided for, as well as the Seamen of the Baltimore, and I beg leave to recommend them to your official assistance.' Double matted and framed with an engraved portrait of Adams, to an overall size of 20.25 x 16. Intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, a slightly fuzzy appearance to middle name of signature, a bit of light toning, and a small pencil notation to bottom, otherwise fine condition. The sailors that Adams was trying to help were American seamen stuck in London following the War of 1812, not allowed to return to the US due to England’s block on emigration.
