Rare 1938 Pasadena Junior College yearbook, 'The Pasadena Campus,' 306 pages, 9 x 11.5. In his first college yearbook, ‘Jack Robinson’ is pictured on pages 119 (Varsity Football) signed 'Best of luck and happiness in the future to one swell guy. Jack Robinson,' on page 132 (Varsity Basketball) signed 'Loads of success, Jack,' and on page 138 (Varsity Baseball) signed 'Jack Robinson.' He also shown on pages 146 (Varsity Track) and 149 (Varsity Track team photo). Robinson is mentioned in the text on several occasions, including on page 124, 'As the first half drew to a close, Jackie Robinson intercepted a desperate Loyola pass on his 25 and eluded the whole Loyola team to chalk up the third Pasadena touchdown…following a 36-yard pass from Robinson to Tom Collins, they scored the last of Pasadena’s 25 points.'
In very good condition, with transparent tape affixed to torn spine and edges of covers at joints (touching the cover lettering), partial separation at hinges, multiple other signatures and inscriptions throughout, and handling wear. All three pages signed by Robinson are fine and clean.
Long before his historic role in breaking baseball’s color barrier, his numerous awards, his election to the Baseball Hall of Fame, and the retirement of his number "42" by every team in baseball, Jackie Robinson was a standout player at the two-year Pasadena Junior College. It was there that Robinson began his collection of awards and honors, including helping to win the league baseball championship, the 1938 Junior College Football Championship, and setting the junior college broad-jump record of 25 feet 6½ inches. During the ‘38 season, he was also elected to the All-Southland Baseball Junior College team and was honored as the Most Valuable Junior College Player in Southern California. The lucky student who passed this book around for signatures was fortunate enough to obtain the autograph of the school's star athlete, Jack Robinson, on all three photos of him in the yearbook—one photo for each of the three sports at which he excelled—football, basketball and baseball.
