Partly-printed war-dated DS, signed "James Madison" as president and "Jas. Monroe" as secretary of state, one page, 21.25 x 16.5, December 8, 1813. A four-language ship's papers issued to "William Nibberts master or commander of the Schooner called the Russell…lying at present in the port of New Bedford bound for Canton, and laden with Ginseng." In good to very good condition, with partial separations along intersecting folds, one through a single letter of Madison's signature, old reinforcement along central vertical fold, uniform toning and foxing, mild overall edge wear, and circular toning from seal. The white wafer seal remains crisp and intact. Canton, also known as Guangzhou, was one of the five National Central Cities of China. A sought-after format, made more intriguing by the unusual destination and cargo. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
