Description

Commenting on a book about the French Revolution: “I have had ample reason to be satisfied that its principles and its sentiments are such as eminently befit an American”

Boldly penned ALS as secretary of state, one page, trimmed to a size of 7.25 x 6.75, May 15, 1823. Letter of personal thanks to W. C. Somerville of Baltimore, also offering his approval of Somerville’s essays. In full: “I have received your very obliging letter of the 10th instt. together with a copy of your letters from Paris, on the causes and consequences of the French Revolution. From the cursory perusal that I have been able to give this work, I have had ample reason to be satisfied that its principles and its sentiments are such as eminently befit an American, and a friend of universal benevolence. I party you to accept my thanks for it.” Letter is affixed to an 8 x 11 off-white sheet. In very good condition, with a light vertical fold through a single letter of signature, small hole affecting one letter of text, and scattered light soiling. Somerville wrote Letters from Paris on the Causes and Consequences of the French Revolution, which was published in 1823. A fine example of Adams’s diplomatic persona. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
