Early Sondheim document arranging royalty payments for 'West Side Story'

DS, one page, 8.5 x 11, July 17, 1957. Agreement between Sondheim and G. Shirmer Inc. Regarding arrangements “whereby you will publish the musical compositions comprising the score of the forthcoming Broadway musical play tentatively entitled ‘West Side Story.’ The lyrics of said musical compositions have been written by me, in collaboration with Leonard Bernstein.” Sondheim authorizes payments to be made to Chappell & Co. Signed at the bottom in black ink by Sondheim. In fine condition, with several vertical creases to left side, as well as two punch holes. After tryouts in Washington D.C. and Philadelphia, the original Broadway production opened on September 26, 1957. An important document pertaining to one of Sondheim’s best known works.
