Dubuffet writes “My dear Rene.” In full (translated): “We should meet of course and pick the grapes of ripe friendship – ripen during the lonely times apart. I have a strong desire to meet you as well and I too feel sorry to never meet you. Your kind and affectionate note moves me a lot. How would you like to drink a goblet together tomorrow Saturday afternoon let say at 4:00 PM at closerie des Lilas [small property called the Lilacs), a peaceful place but maybe you are leaving for the weekend on Saturday these days of sunny weather, in that case we could postpone until Monday – or Tuesday as it suits you. If you do not cancel I will go wait for you at 4:00 PM tomorrow at the ‘Closerie,’ at the terrace then if the weather is nice, and inside if not. Besides if you do not have a phone in the area or if my letter reaches you too late do not worry, I will wait at this Closerie until 4:30 PM and if I do not see you come I will understand that it is postpone until Monday and I will go back Monday.” Matted with a photo of the artist seated amongst some of his work to an overall size of 14 x 11.
