Description

In 1963, shortly after helping “Gordo Cooper's recent orbital flight,” Schirra finds himself buried with “training activities in connection with the Gemini and Apollo projects”

Early TLS signed “Walter M. Schirra,” two pages, 8 x 10.5, NASA letterhead, stamp-dated June 24, 1963. Letter to the director of student personnel at Paterson State College declining an invitation to speak. In part: “I would be remiss if I did not offer my apologies for not responding earlier, but I am certain you know that I was busy in connection with Gordo Cooper’s recent orbital flight. In addition…the heavy demands of our accelerated program will preclude my doing so…As you know, we here at NASA strongly favor increased quality in the nation’s educational program and this Center, whenever possible, does what it can to lend support to our institutions of higher learning. I would be particularly gratified to represent our Agency on your campus, but all of our group will be heavily committed for an indeterminate period for technical assignments and instruction, field trips, and a variety of other training activities in connection with the Gemini and Apollo projects. Consequently, our availability for extra-program activities will be greatly curtailed.” In fine condition, with pages stapled together at top left, and some light creases and wrinkles. An early example with terrific content. Pre-certified Scott Cornish and RRAuction COA.
