Description

“I did not observe at first that you wished an autograph letter but by a postscript I can make this partly my own writing”

TLS as president signed “Wm. H. Taft,” one page, 7 x 9, White House letterhead, June 21, 1910. Taft uniquely responds to a special request by Jesse C. Green of West Chester, Pennsylvania. In full: “Representative Butler has handed me your note of the 18th of June. I thank you for writing and send you congratulations and best wishes.” The president then adds a five-line postscript. In part: “I did not observe at first that you wished an autograph letter but by a postscript I can make this partly my own writing.” He has added his initials at the end of the message. In fine condition, with creasing, horizontal mailing fold passing across the top of his signature, and his initials light due to diminished ink flow. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
