Description

On the eve of D-Day, FDR sends a gift: “It is certainly interesting and appropriate for the Postmaster General who...gets out much better looking stamps for the U.S.A. than this foreign collection”

TLS as president, one page, 7 x 9, personal letterhead, June 5, 1944. One day before the D-Day invasion, FDR sends a stamp collection as a birthday president to Postmaster General Frank C. Walker. In full: “This is a belated birthday present. I could not have the marking removed, but when it came to me I thought of you and that you might like to have it ‘in memory.’ It is certainly interesting and appropriate for the Postmaster General who, incidentally, gets out much better looking stamps for the U.S.A. than this foreign collection.” In fine condition. Remarkably unique association between the stamp-collecting president and his postmaster, sent on the eve of one of World War II’s most historic events! Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
