Description

A Confederate colonel writes of a family portrait

Confederate colonel, Virginia Military Institute graduate, and Mexican War veteran who was surprised by Union troops in June 1861. ALS, one page, 7.75 x 9.75, March 17, 1858. Porterfield writes his brother-in-law, George P. Terrill, regarding family photographs. In part: “The photographs have been taken at last. They are too indistinct…and I have declined to send them. The artist says he can dress them off & paint them & thus make them better than the daguerreotype.” Intersecting folds, creasing, and an irregular pattern of staining, otherwise fine condition.
