Description

Dickens reminds artist David Roberts of his pledge to review the upcoming issue of All the Year Round

ALS, one page, 5 x 8, on letterhead of All The Year Round (A Weekly Journal Conducted by Charles Dickens), May 8, 1862. Letter to artist and his friend David Roberts. In full: “This is to remind you that you stand pledged to go over the Almanack for the months of June, with Stanny, and to let me know when you will come down together to Gad’s Hill. You are to choose your own days, and are to let me know (as soon as you can) what the days are, that I may make my arrangements accordingly. Look up that old Salt…and bring him a book.” Archivally double matted and framed with an engraved portrait of Dickens to an overall size of 24.5 x 18.5. In fine condition, with a central horizontal and vertical fold, one through a single letter of signature, and two small vertical rust stains to top edge.

All the Year Round—the subject of this correspondence—was Dickens’ weekly literary magazine, an ‘unconventional almanack’ published between 1859 and 1895. Edited by Dickens, the publication featured the serialization of many prominent novels, including A Tale of Two Cities in 1859. He sought creative input from his artistic friends, including Roberts and Clarkson ‘Stanny’ Stanfield, another painter and mutual close friend whose house was typically used as a gathering place for the men. After the respective deaths of Roberts and Stanfield—both a few years after this correspondence—Dickens paid tribute to them in separate pieces published in his publication. Oversized. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
